  16. swampland of Norfolk; in the second, a Thatcheresque career
  17. woman chats with her peers from throughout history. In both,
  18. British Feminist Caryl Churchill displays acerbic ironies and
  19. dazzling technique.

  21. Galas. Or:  The Life and Hard Times of Maria Callas. Leave it
  22. to off-off-Broadway's Charles Ludlam--playwright, producer,
  23. director and, in the title role, every inch a diva--to put the
  24. art back into commedia dell'arte.

  26. Isn't It Romantic. Wendy Wasserstein looks at two sisters under
  27. the skin--one a Wasp princess, the other a Jewish frogette--in
  28. an irresistible off-broadway comedy about coming to terms with
  29. endearment.

  31. My One and Only. A trunkful of Gershwin songs, colorful sets
  32. from a wise child's kindergarten and a pair of toe-tapping
  33. charmers in Twiggy and Tommy Tune make for Broadway's airiest
  34. enchantment.

  37. commit suicide; her mom uses every dithery wile to prevent her.
  38. Marsha Norman's Pulitzer prizewinner is equally entertaining
  39. and harrowing; in the only roles, Kathy Bates and Anne Pitoniak
  40. shine with love and anger.

  42. Painting Churches. The twilight of life, the dawn of senility;
  43. Chekhov comes to Beacon Hill in Tina Howe's sweet, zestful off-
  44. Broadway comedy.

  46. Passion. The Jekyll of respectability duels with the Hyde of
  47. libido. Peter Nichols' unsettling domestic comedy survived a
  48. ragged Broadway production with many of its virtues (and Actress
  49. Roxanne Hart's Circean charms) intact.

  51. Quartermaine's Terms. Quartermaine, an aging instructor at an
  52. English school for foreigners, is one of nature's near misses:
  53. a decent mediocrity, for whom other people's crises are mere

  55. off-Broadway performance, Simon Gray's British import found the
  56. perfect pitch of melancholy.
